Electric vehicles have changed the job of the tire. The shift is not only about range or rolling resistance. A tire fitted to an electric SUV now has to manage higher vehicle weight, instant torque, quieter cabins, braking stability, wear life and energy efficiency at the same time. That is why original equipment, or OE, tire nominations matter. They show which tire technologies have passed a vehicle manufacturer’s own engineering requirements, not only a replacement-market sales pitch.

Giti Tire’s latest OE nomination for the all-electric BMW iX1 and BMW iX2 is a useful example of that shift. The approved fitment is the GitiSynergy H3 in size 245/40 R20 99Y XL, developed for BMW Group’s performance, efficiency and sustainability requirements for its latest electric vehicle platforms. For drivers, the important point is not the badge on the sidewall alone. It is what the approval says about the technical trade-offs behind modern EV tires.

Why OE approval is different from a normal tire launch

A new tire launch can tell buyers what a manufacturer wants to highlight. An OE nomination tells a different story. To be selected for a vehicle program, the tire has to match a specific car’s handling, braking, comfort, noise, efficiency and durability targets. In the case of electric vehicles, those targets are even tighter because tire behavior has a direct effect on range, cabin refinement and long-term ownership cost.

The BMW iX1 and iX2 approval is therefore more than a product announcement. Giti says the GitiSynergy H3 was engineered to deliver very low rolling resistance, reduced noise levels, extended wear life and an aerodynamic sidewall design. The tire also achieves the highest EU rolling resistance label rating of A and carries the BMW star marking, which identifies homologation to BMW Group’s OE specifications.

That combination is not easy. A tire designed only for low rolling resistance may feel efficient but weak under hard braking or quick steering inputs. A tire designed only for grip can add rolling drag and reduce range. The engineering value is in balancing these competing demands without allowing one metric to ruin another.

The EV tire problem: efficiency without giving up control

Electric SUVs such as the BMW iX1 and iX2 put unusual pressure on tire design. Battery weight increases the load each tire must carry. Electric motors deliver torque quickly, which can accelerate tread wear if compound and structure are not properly matched. Because EV powertrains are quieter than combustion engines, road noise and tire cavity noise become more noticeable inside the cabin.

This is why the GitiSynergy H3 nomination is relevant beyond a single fitment. It points to the broader direction of EV tire development: lower rolling resistance for efficiency, quieter running for cabin comfort, enough structural strength for higher load demands, and stable handling for heavier vehicles.

Giti’s wider EV-ready messaging follows the same logic. The company has stated that EVs place greater stress on tires because of higher vehicle weight, instant torque and increased expectations for low noise and efficiency. Across Europe and Asia, Giti says its tires have been selected as OE fitments for EVs from brands including Volkswagen, BYD and BMW, with rolling resistance, wear performance and noise control identified as key development priorities.

Where the GitiSynergy H3 fits into Giti’s EV strategy

The BMW iX1 and iX2 fitment adds another layer to Giti’s EV-ready portfolio. It follows Giti’s broader work around products such as the GitiControl P10, GitiSynergy H2+ and GitiSport S2+, which are positioned for different electric-mobility use cases. The GitiControl P10 is presented around load, torque, durability and grip balance. The GitiSynergy family is positioned more around efficiency and comfort, while the GitiSport S2+ shows the performance end of the EV tire spectrum.

For the BMW nomination, the GitiSynergy H3 sits naturally in the efficiency-and-comfort lane. The size, 245/40 R20 99Y XL, also tells part of the story. The XL marking indicates extra load capacity, which is relevant for electric SUVs. The Y speed rating and 20-inch fitment point toward a premium vehicle requirement rather than a basic economy tire brief.

The key guest-post takeaway is simple: EV tires are no longer a niche category. They are becoming a core part of how carmakers tune the total driving experience of an electric vehicle.

The role of AdvanZtech and global testing

Giti says the approved BMW fitment was designed and engineered at its European Research & Development Centre in Hannover, Germany. Testing was conducted at the company’s MIRA proving ground in the United Kingdom, with additional validation at key locations in Germany and Spain. That matters because tire behavior can change across road surfaces, temperatures, speeds and load conditions.

The project used AdvanZtech, Giti’s globally integrated R&D platform. Giti describes AdvanZtech 2.0 as the next evolution of its tire technology, developed to meet demand for quality, performance and safety while expanding into eight areas of expertise that include sustainability, eco-conscious compounds, energy-efficient manufacturing and performance responsibility.

The BMW project also fits several of those technology areas. Low rolling resistance belongs to the economical and sustainable side of development. Reduced noise connects to comfort and ride quality. High load-bearing and durability are part of the resilient and enduring side of EV tire engineering. Handling stability remains central because heavier EVs still need precise steering response and braking confidence.

Sustainability is becoming part of the performance brief

One detail in Giti’s announcement should not be overlooked: the GitiSynergy H3 was developed to meet BMW Group’s performance, efficiency and sustainability requirements. This reflects a wider change in tire engineering. Sustainability is no longer only about recycled material claims or factory emissions. It increasingly intersects with efficiency, tread life and the energy required to move the vehicle.

Giti’s technology pages show how broad that work is becoming. The company has presented a 93% sustainably sourced tire prototype using 53% renewable materials and 40% recycled materials, with a roadmap toward mass production by 2030. That prototype is separate from the BMW OE fitment, so it should not be confused with the GitiSynergy H3. However, it helps explain the broader direction of Giti’s R&D investment: reducing environmental impact while preserving the performance standards drivers expect.

For EVs, the most immediate sustainability lever may still be rolling resistance. A tire that reduces energy loss can support range and reduce energy consumption over the life of the vehicle. That is why the EU rolling resistance A rating on the BMW-approved fitment is one of the most important technical details in the announcement.

What drivers should take from the BMW nomination

For most drivers, OE tire approvals can feel like inside-baseball industry news. But they influence the tires that end up on the road. When a tire is homologated for a specific vehicle, it has been developed around that vehicle’s weight, steering feel, braking targets, ride comfort, noise profile and efficiency goals.

That does not mean every driver needs the exact same OE tire forever. Replacement choices still depend on climate, driving style, budget and availability. But it does mean the original specification should be taken seriously, especially on electric vehicles where small tire changes can affect range, refinement and wear.

The BMW iX1 and iX2 nomination also shows how tire makers are being pulled deeper into vehicle development. The tire is no longer a generic round component added at the end. On EV platforms, it is part of the efficiency system, the comfort system and the safety system.

A sign of where EV tires are heading

Giti’s BMW iX1 and iX2 OE nomination is not just another supplier win. It is a signal of where EV tire technology is going: more integrated, more validated and more specialized around the real demands of electric vehicles.

The next stage of EV tire development will likely be defined by this balance. Drivers will expect range without a harsh ride, quietness without vague handling, durability without heavy rolling resistance, and sustainability without a compromise in safety. The companies that can meet those trade-offs will shape the tires fitted to the next generation of electric SUVs.

For Giti, the BMW nomination adds credibility to its EV-ready strategy. For drivers, it is a reminder that the all-terrain tires underneath an EV are not an afterthought. They are one of the technologies that determine how efficient, quiet, stable and confident the vehicle feels every day.
